ECDIS

The Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) is an advanced navigation system that replaces traditional paper charts with electronic navigational charts (ENCs). It integrates data from multiple sources such as GPS, radar, Automatic Identification System (AIS), and depth sounders to provide real-time positioning and situational awareness for vessels. ECDIS is recognized by the International Maritime Organization as an approved alternative for meeting chart carriage requirements, making it mandatory for certain classes of ships under SOLAS regulations. The system offers features like route planning, monitoring, and automatic alerts for hazards such as shallow waters or restricted areas. It also supports continuous chart updates and overlays additional information such as weather forecasts and tidal data, which enhances decision-making and safety during navigation. By combining accurate chart data with sensor inputs, ECDIS significantly reduces the risk of human error and improves operational efficiency in modern maritime transport.

Furuno FMD3200

The Furuno FMD3200 is an Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) designed for professional maritime navigation. It features a 19-inch color LCD display with a resolution of 1280 × 1024 pixels (SXGA) and offers intuitive operation through a trackball, scroll wheel, and QWERTY keyboard for easy route and waypoint management. The system uses a cutting-edge chart-drawing engine that provides instantaneous chart redraw with seamless zooming and panning, reducing operational stress and improving situational awareness.

The FMD3200 supports both vector charts (IHO S-57, S-63) and raster charts (ARCS), as well as private charts like C-MAP Professional+. It complies with IMO and IEC standards including MSC.232(82) and IEC 61174, ensuring full regulatory compliance for mandatory ECDIS carriage. Key functions include route planning and monitoring, radar overlay when integrated with Furuno FAR-2xx7/FAR-2xx8 series radars, AIS target tracking, NAVTEX message display, and Man Overboard (MOB) marking.

The system offers direct sensor integration via eight serial I/O ports and can connect through Ethernet using a sensor adapter and HUB100 for networked data distribution. It also supports Admiralty Information Overlay (AIO) and Jeppesen Dynamic Licensing for chart management. Additional features include alert management, playback of voyage data, and optional Track Control System (TCS) and Conning display capabilities. Operating temperature ranges from -15°C to +55°C, with power input options of 100–115/220–230 VAC.

Overall, the Furuno FMD3200 combines high performance, regulatory compliance, and user-friendly design, making it suitable for both new installations and retrofits on vessels requiring ECDIS functionality
