Aids To Navigation

AIS
AIS (Automatic Identification System) is a maritime tracking system to broadcast a vessel’s identity, position, speed, and course for navigation safety and collision avoidance.

Anemometer
An anemometer is an instrument used to measure wind speed and sometimes wind direction. It works by capturing the movement of air, often through rotating cups or blades, and converting that motion into a speed reading.

BNWAS
Bridge Navigational Watch Alarm System is a safety system that monitors the alertness of the officer on watch and activates alarms if no response is given within a set time, escalating to crew areas to prevent accidents.

Doppler Speed Log
Measures a vessel’s speed through water or over ground using the Doppler effect. It sends acoustic signals toward the seabed or water layers and calculates speed based on the frequency shift of the reflected signals.

Doppler Sonar
Measures a vessel’s speed through water or over ground by sending acoustic signals and calculating the frequency shift of the reflected waves using the Doppler effect.

ECDIS
Displays electronic navigational charts and integrates real-time data such as GPS position, AIS targets, and radar overlays to assist safe route planning and monitoring on ships.

Echo Sounder
Measures water depth beneath a vessel by sending sound pulses downward and timing the return of the echoes from the seabed.

GNSS
Provides global positioning and timing data by receiving signals from satellite constellations such as GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, and BeiDou to determine a vessel’s precise location anywhere on Earth.

Navigation Lights
Indicate a vessel’s status and movements at night or in low visibility by using specific colored lights arranged according to international regulations, helping other ships identify its type, size, and direction.

Planning Station
A planning station on a vessel is a dedicated area or console used for voyage planning and monitoring, typically integrated with navigation systems like ECDIS, radar, and communication equipment.

Standalone Radars
Provides radar-based detection and tracking of targets around a vessel without integration into other navigation systems, offering independent situational awareness for collision avoidance and navigation.

Chart Radars
Combines radar functionality with electronic navigational charts to provide target detection and tracking overlaid on chart data, improving situational awareness and route monitoring.

Satellite Speed Log
Calculates a vessel’s speed over ground by receiving signals from GNSS satellites and processing positional changes over time.

Satellite Compass
Determines a vessel’s heading by using signals from multiple GNSS satellites to calculate orientation instead of relying on magnetic or gyro compasses.

VDR / S-VDR
Records and stores a vessel’s navigational and operational data, including audio from the bridge, radar images, and sensor information, to aid accident investigation and enhance safety.

Remote Displays
A remote display is a compact, secondary screen designed to show essential data from a primary navigation or monitoring system. It provides real-time information allowing operators to view key metrics from different locations on a vessel or in a control room.

Gyro Compass
A gyro compass is a navigation instrument that determines true north by using the principles of a fast-spinning gyroscope. Unlike a magnetic compass, it is unaffected by magnetic fields, making it highly accurate for maritime applications.

Steering Systems
Marine steering systems on large vessels are mechanisms that control the ship’s direction by adjusting the rudder angle, typically powered by hydraulic, electric, or electro-hydraulic systems. They ensure precise maneuvering and stability during navigation.

Autopilot Systems
Autopilot systems on large vessels are automated control systems that maintain a set course without constant manual steering, using inputs from sensors like gyrocompasses and GPS. They improve navigation efficiency, reduce crew workload, and enhance fuel economy during long voyages.
