The Ship Security Alert System (SSAS) is a safety and security feature required under the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code, designed to silently notify authorities when a vessel faces a security threat. When activated, the system sends a covert distress signal to the ship’s designated security company and relevant coastal states, providing the vessel’s identity and position without alerting anyone on board who may be posing the threat. Unlike general distress systems, SSAS does not broadcast openly and does not trigger alarms on the vessel, allowing crew members to request help discreetly during piracy attempts, hijackings, or other hostile situations. By enabling immediate and confidential communication with shore authorities, the SSAS enhances maritime security and strengthens global efforts to safeguard vessels and crews at sea.

The Furuno FELCOM‑18 incorporates full SSAS capability through the addition of the dedicated IC‑307 SSAS Alert Unit, enabling the terminal to function as a compliant Ship Security Alert System for GMDSS‑equipped vessels. The FELCOM‑18 supports silent security alert transmission via its connected SSAS alert buttons, which can be installed in secure onboard locations and used to discreetly notify authorities during security threats. Furuno lists SSAS functionality as a built‑in feature of the FELCOM‑18, with SSAS capability activated when the optional SSAS alert units are installed, and the system fully meets IMO requirements through this configuration. The alert units integrate with the FELCOM‑18’s Inmarsat‑C communication platform, allowing position‑encoded alerts to be transmitted reliably using the ship’s satellite link.
